What is the Difference Between a Crisp and a Crumble

A crumble is a dish of baked fresh fruit, with a streusel crumb topping. The topping is usually made with butter, flour, and sugar. Like a crumble, a crisp is a baked fresh fruit dessert consisting of a crust or topping made mainly from oats.

A crisp is a baked fresh fruit dessert made with basic ingredients of old fashioned oats, flour, butter, and sugar, or in my recipe – maple syrup. The topping completely covers the fruit and is baked until the topping is golden brown.

A blueberry crumble is similar to blueberry fruit crisps, as both contain fresh fruit. However, a crumble topping usually does not have old-fashioned oats and is made with flour, butter, and sugar.

  • Pie Dish or Cast Iron Skillet: If you have been around the blog for a while, you will know how much I love baking in a cast-iron skillet. But if you don’t have one, a pie dish will work just as well.
  • Large Bowl: Made by hand in Texas, these bowls are meant to last a lifetime and become family heirlooms.
  • Small Bowl: Stoneware bowls are a staple in my kitchen, and I love this set that comes in a 10″, 14″, and 16″ sizes.
  • Pastry Blender: A pastry blender helps incorporate the butter into dry ingredients without overworking the dough.

Healthy Blueberry Crisp Ingredients

Here is a list of the all-natural, whole food ingredients you will need to make this easy blueberry crisp recipe. The total measurements are in the printable recipe at the bottom of the post.

Blueberry Crisp Topping

  • Old Fashioned Oats: For this recipe, you can use old fashioned oats or quick oats. However, I have found that for the best results, I like using old fashioned rolled oats as they give the best texture for crisps.
  • All Purpose Organic Flour: see note under blueberry filling.
  • Cinnamon: I prefer to use organic cinnamon as it has a much stronger flavor.
  • Cold Butter: I use salted butter, but you can use unsalted butter. If unsalted, I suggest a pinch of salt to the crisp topping recipe.
  • Maple Syrup: Organic maple syrup is used in this recipe.

Blueberry Filling

  • Fresh Blueberries: This recipe uses 6 cups of juicy fresh blueberries. And while I enjoy picking blueberries from our local farm, unfortunately, they are unavailable year-round. So, frozen berries can be used in this recipe. I suggest allowing the blueberries to thaw and patting them dry before using them in the recipe.
  • Maple Syrup: Pure, organic maple syrup is the best. Do not substitute pancake syrup.
  • All Purpose Organic Flour: While any variety of all-purpose flour will work for this recipe, I almost always use unbleached, organic flour in the kitchen.
  • Cinnamon: Trust me when I say that organic cinnamon has a much stronger flavor than most generic versions. So, if you can, use organic!
  • Vanilla Extract: No imitation vanilla is used for making recipes in our home; pure vanilla has the best flavor!

Tips for Making Blueberry Crisp with Oats

  • Prevent Over Browning – To prevent over browning of the crisp topping, cover the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil halfway through baking.
  • Catch the Overflow – Place a cookie sheet on the rack below the baking dish when baking the blueberry crisp. This way, if the blueberry filling bubbles over, it will not stick to the bottom of the oven.
  • Allow the Crisp to Cool – Allowing the crisp to completely cool before serving is best. Much like making a Blueberry Pie, this allows the juices to thicken up.

How to Store Leftover Blueberry Crisp

  • Store this blueberry crisp in an airtight sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The crisp topping will not be as crisp once it has been refrigerated, and while still delicious, this crisp is best enjoyed fresh.
  • To reheat in the oven, place in an oven-safe dish and reheat at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes.
