Simple Vanilla Ice Cream

Vanilla Ice Cream or Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

What is the difference between vanilla and vanilla bean ice cream? Really, the only difference is one uses vanilla extract while the other uses the tiny seeds scraped from inside the vanilla beans.

This recipe calls for pure vanilla extract and a vanilla bean pod. The flavor of adding both is just crazy delicious! And while a vanilla bean is crazy expensive, there is nothing like those specks of real vanilla beans in ice cream and the added intensity of flavor.

No vanilla beans? No problem, substitute the vanilla bean for two additional teaspoons of real vanilla extract to the milk mixture during the blending process.

This is what we use in our home, and I love the vintage feel that it lends of churning handmade ice cream. Other models require freezing the ice cream bowl, adding the cold ice cream mixture and there is no rock salt or ice involved.
  • Ice Cream Rock Salt: mixed with ice in an ice cream maker for delicious homemade frozen ice cream desserts.

Homemade Ice Cream Simple Ingredient Checklist

There is nothing better than handmade, freshly churned, creamy sweet vanilla ice cream. Made from scratch, with fresh ingredients and no added fillers, it is how ice cream should be made. For best results, use farm-fresh or high-quality (organic) ingredients.

  • Vanilla: Using real vanilla extract will result in the best flavor of vanilla ice cream. Imitation vanilla flavor just doesn’t give the same deep, rich flavor.
  • Vanilla Bean Pod: not a cheap ingredient, but if you can add in the tiny seeds from scraping just one vanilla bean, it will result in the amazing ice cream flavor.
  • Fresh Heavy Cream: A simple farm fresh ingredient that we source from a local farmer. However, if this is unavailabe, use heavy whipping cream. Don’t worry about the fat content, this is ice cream, and the creamiest texture happens when using high quality cream.
  • Whole Milk: for the best results in this easy recipe, use whole milk. The extra amount of fat contributes to the texture, creaminess, and richness of this amazing ice cream.
  • Sugar: plain white sugar will work fine in this recipe.
