This year, I chose to keep my simple Christmas open shelves minimal. Yet, cozy and functional in our farmhouse style kitchen.
The intention behind my Christmas shelves was to keep them simple, minimal and functional. As a family we use this space everyday and all items must be easily accessible.
So, with lots of faux greenery and a small vintage style bell garland I achieved just the simple Christmas open shelves look I was hoping for.

Simple Christmas Style Shelves
I recently shared my Simple Natural Christmas Table Setting and in keeping with the simple theme, I wanted to share these shelves.
Our open kitchen shelving is a DIY project that my husband and I were able to do in under 30 minutes. I have truly enjoyed getting to decorate the shelves and even recently shared a post, How to Decorate Open Kitchen Shelves.
Since we use our shelves everyday, I needed to choose a simple decorating idea. The decorations had to remain where we didn’t have to remove them in order to get to the items that we use on a daily basis.
One of the great things about greenery is that it can be used throughout the winter season. I generally take down a lot of my Christmas decor the day after Christmas. Using seasonal greenery, like this garland, when Christmas passes, the garland will still fit into the winter decorations.
How to Decorate Your Kitchen Shelves for Christmas
Most years, like this one HERE, I choose to use real greenery. However, real greenery caused me to have a sneezing allergic reaction this year. So, I had to change my plan and go with a faux Cypress garland. The garland ended up being a great choice because I don’t have to worry about needles falling off which can cause quite a mess.
I used two faux Cypress garlands. They are both 72″ long which gave me enough length for the garlands to hang down over the edges of the shelves.
Then, I placed the garland in front of and behind several of the various elements that were on the shelves. A little bit of fluffing, and pulling the garland around items on the shelf gave me the perfect simple look.

Jingle Bell Garland
Did you catch a glimpse of the tiny jingle bell garland? Simple, tiny details can often be one of my favorite elements in decorating.
I was able to find the jingle bell garland already put together from a local shop but it would be so simple to make one on your own. Simply take little jingle bells and tie them onto whatever kind of cord or twine of your choice. My favorite little bells are these simple silver ones or maybe even this more rustic style bell.
