Rinse the asparagus spears well in cold water and trim the ends using the snapping method: take three to four stalks, hold them loosely in your hand, and bend the stems until they naturally snap where the tough part ends.
In a heavy skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
When the butter has melted, add the asparagus to the pan and cook 5 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning, until lightly browned and fork-tender.
When the asparagus is almost finished cooking, stir in the salt, pepper, and minced garlic. Adding garlic at the end prevents burning and gives the best flavor. Serve hot.

Add Garlic at the End — since garlic cooks very quickly, adding it at the end of cooking will prevent the garlic from burning.
Don't Overcrowd the Pan — asparagus will cook more evenly if the spears aren't overcrowded.
