Freshly baked bread – the smell that drifts from the oven – if the home had a smell, I would say this would be the one. These are easy to make homemade yeast rolls!
My sweet grandmother baked the most delicious bread and I can’t recall ever seeing a recipe card in her hand. She had spent years making the exact same recipe and I have never tasted anything like them since. Is there any other favorite way to eat a roll than fresh from the oven, slathered with local honey and butter? I think not.
I know that bread making can seem intimidating. It can sound hard but I promise you it’s not. There is great reward in mixing the dough, waiting for it to rise, rolling it out and then waiting for it to rise again. The process can seem long but the taste is worth every moment of waiting.
I woke up to a gloomy and overcast day and I was in the baking frame of mind. Mainly because tomorrow is my husbands Christmas party at work. I always get asked about making the rolls and it is something that I enjoy. However, it’s been a year since I have made homemade rolls mainly because I have switched to a different style of eating. So, I messaged another homemaker that I admire (Robyn @edgewoodfarmhouse) and she directed me to her most favorite recipe that her family lovingly calls “Holy Lord” good rolls. Let me just tell you, she is right!
This is our families new forever bread roll recipe. I have several recipes like that, the ones that when you make them, the children and husband proclaim “this is the best ever” or the recipes that are frequently requested.
I pulled these from the oven and had all four of my children scampering to the kitchen asking for one. They proclaimed they were the very best rolls and couldn’t believe that a roll could melt in your mouth. Slathered in honey and butter, they could have eaten each and every roll. Then I had to remind them that they were for a lot of hard-working soldiers at tomorrows Christmas party but I promised to make more of them this week just for them.
Homemade Yeast Rolls
In a mixer combine the following ingredients and allow them to “foam”
1/2 cup warm water
4 tsp yeast
1 Tablespoon sugar
1 cup melted butter
2 cups milk (I heat the butter and milk together)
1 Tablespoon salt
1 Cup sugar
4 cups flour
Blend in mixer until well combined then add 6 more cups of flour, let it knead in the mixer for 10 minutes. Let the dough rise for one hour. After the hour, form into rolls and place on baking sheet. Then, allow the rolls to rise for one more hour. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes. Take off baking sheet and allow to cool on wire rack.

The dough will be very sticky. You can use more flour to help with this issue by adding a little at a time. However, I found that using two spoons to form the rolls was very effective. Simply scoop out the dough with one spoon and use the other one to push the dough off the spoon and onto the baking sheet. Hopefully, that makes sense. Please let me know if you make these. I didn’t even realize until the end of today, that it was December 20, my sweet grandmothers birthday. She would have been 79 years old today. I know heaven is a lot sweeter with her there but I sure miss her here. I love this photo of her and my grandfather making rolls together.
