Make an herbal infused body butter using calendula, chamomile, lavender and marshmallow root. These herbs are infused with jojoba oil and avocado oil to create a moisturizing and soothing body butter for softening and soothing dry, cracked hands and skin.
My Personal Story
I haven’t always used toxic free body products but I wish I would have known about their healing products years ago. Our oldest daughter suffered for several years with extreme eczema as a baby, and nothing from the doctor ever worked on her. She eventually outgrew the eczema but she still has the scars. I have wondered how differently her skin would have been with all natural healing herbs.
Our oldest son suffers from acne and we just started using this on his face. The difference that I have seen in just a few short days has been amazing! He has a few minor spots on his face but none of them are red and inflamed like they were. He is also using this on one of his eczema spots.
My husband has been putting this on my dry cracked feet at night and I have started to see so much healing. The bottoms of my feet, mainly my heel area looks like dry parched desert ground. I have tried a variety of creams and lotions but nothing has worked to the degree that this body butter has.
I am so grateful for the healing power of herbs so don’t be afraid to apply this to your entire body! I never share recipes with my audience unless it is something that I have truly seen work with my own family and this has worked so well!
Best Herbs for Body Butter
There are many great herbs for creating an herbal infusion that can be used in a body butter recipe. For this recipe, I chose to use four skin nourishing oils.
Calendula: antiseptic, antimicrobial, and has anti-inflammatory properties for your skin. Calendula can help with wound healing by stimulating tissue and is well known for helping with skin issues such as eczema.
Chamomile: Another powerhouse packed herb filled with antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.
Lavender: Lavender is suitable for all skin types and is effective in treating oily skin as well as acne, dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis. Lavender can help keep your skin looking young, firm, and smooth which makes it a great herb to use for anti-aging as well.
Marshmallow Root: extremely moisturizing and anti-inflammatory, helps soothe and heal everything from dry skin to psoriasis and eczema.
Best Oils for Body Butter
Most recipes call for coconut oil to be used when making body butter. I, however, find that coconut is not as easily absorb into the skin as some other oils are. So, for my recipe I use Jojoba and Avocado oil as well as Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter.
Jojoba oil is wonderful for the skin because it has absorption properties that are similar to our skins own sebum.
Avocado oil contains the vitamins A, D and E and is know to help moisturize and protect the skin. It also helps increase collagen metabolism. Jojoba is a well-penetrating moisturizer.
Other great choices would include Grapeseed oil. It is considered an excellent choice for damaged and stressed skin. Hemp Seed oil is another great option as it is anti-inflammatory, and is very moisturizing. Another option would be to make your own infused oils like I did with Calendula.
Whipped Body Butter Recipe
1/2 tbsp Calendula
1/2 tbsp Chamomile
1/2 tbsp Lavender
1/2 tbsp Marshmallow Root
1/4 cup Shea Butter
1/4 cup Cocoa Butter
1/4 cup Jojoba Oil
1/4 cup Avocado Oil
Optional: Essential Oils – I personally don’t use them in this recipe.
Optional: 1 tsp non-gmo Vitamin E oil – this helps with preserving the body butter but ours never lasts that long and it will last for quite a long time without the addition of the Vitamin E.
Optional: Arrowroot Powder – please see notes below
In a double boiler combine the herbs with Jojoba Oil and Avocado Oil.
Bring to a boil, then turn the burner to low and allow the herbs and allow to infuse for at least 2 hours.
In a separate pan combine the Shea butter and Cocoa butter over low heat. Once melted, remove from the heat.
Using a strainer, strain the herbs from the Jojoba and Avocado oil infusion.
In a mixing bowl combine the Shea/Cocoa butter and the Jojoba/Avocado oils. Then place bowl in the refrigerator until the oils have thickened.
Use a mixer to whip the butter and oils until you get a creamy, thick consistency.
If you don’t get the right consistency at first, stick the mixture back in the fridge to cool more and then mix again with the mixer.
Place body butter into a jar and cover with a lid.
Non Greasy Body Butter
If you are switching to all natural body products and have never used an all natural body butter, then you may find this greasy. One of the biggest steps in preventing a greasy feel is to use a very small amount of the body butter. A little bit goes a very long way!
Arrowroot powder can also be added to the recipe to help the skin absorb the oils more quickly leaving a less greasy feeling. For this recipe I would add 1 tbsp into the oil mixture when you are whipping it together.
How to Use Body Butter
Dab a small amount on your finger and rub generously all over your entire body! I even use this on my face and it leaves it feeling so soft and smooth! And, just remember a little goes a very long way!
