Can you chalk paint a piano? Well of course you can, and it doesn’t take a lot of hard work. It’s actually quite easy with just a few simple steps.
Not to long ago a picture that I had posted on Instagram of this painted piano surfaced on Pinterest and has gained a lot of attention. I chalk painted it back before I started this blog and therefore I don’t have a lot of detailed photos.
This piano was not a family heirloom, in fact, it was a freebie for me. So, I had no issues with painting this piano. The original color wasn’t awful but it just didn’t fit into my home like I wanted to. Armed with some chalk paint and a brush, I got busy painting.
Supplies to Chalk Paint a Piano
Chalk Paint – I used Rustoleum in Charcoal (you can also make your own chalk paint and I share that recipe here)
Painters Tape
Paint Brush
Wax
Time – This will take a couple of hours
How to Chalk Paint a Piano
First, tape off the pedals and the keys. There is no need to remove all the pieces of the piano but you do want to protect the keys and pedals from splashes or drips of paint.
Begin painting. You read that correctly, start painting. The beautiful thing about chalk paint is that you can skip over do any sanding in the beginning stage.
To paint, I started at the bottom and worked my way to the top. Do one coat on the entire piano and let it dry. Then, do a second coat of chalk paint. After the second coat, I used a 220 grit sanding block and sanded the chalk paint down to that smooth, matte finish that I love!
Since the piano was in a high traffic area, I then applied a wax to the finish to protect it. I simply followed the directions on the back of the wax can.
Stand back and enjoy your newly painted piano!
It’s fun to look back and see the various projects I have done before my blogging days. This piano was such an easy makeover with chalk paint and made such a beautiful piece to have in our home. It has since been sold to another family who hopefully enjoys it as much as we do.

You did an amazing job!! It’s beautiful!!
Thank you so much!
What color wax did you use?
How did the Charcoal color turn out for you? I’ve seen some pictures where it looks very blue and others where it looks much more black/ very dark gray.
I liked the Charcoal. However, it did feel gray or blue at times. So, my new favorite is Toasted Poppyseed by Kilz. It is a true black once you put the protective coat on it.
It’s beautiful. I painted my piano with the Rustoleum chiffon cream
me too! This one is so good!
